About Melody

My name is Melody Waite. I currently work as an Elementary Art Teacher for Haslett Public Schools. I am married to my college sweetheart who I met at Cross Country  camp at  Saginaw  Valley State University   and we have three sweet boys together. We were both born and raised in Michigan, but my desire to work, live, and understand other perspectives led us to the South. However, like salmon, we fought upstream to return from the ocean to our freshwater Michigan home to raise our young!

I am certified to teach K-12 Spanish and Visual Arts in Michigan.  My Spanish teaching experience was  in a rural high school  in South Carolina near the Georgia border (close to Augusta - where the Masters Tournament is hosted). I also co-coached the boys  and girls Cross Country teams and volunteered for the Track teams. I still enjoy running and do my best never to miss the Crim   -  10 mile road race through downtown Flint, MI - being from Genesee County this is a long standing tradition! I also enjoy creating art and spending time with my three boys outside. My experience teaching Visual Arts has been at the K-5 levels accompanied with continuing education college courses and observation in teaching all grade levels (K-12) Visual Arts.

I am an educator at heart and in practice. One of my favorite quotes from Boaz Yakin's Remember the Titans  was when Julius Campbell (defensive end) and Gerry Bertier (captain and linebacker) bumped into each other after a long, grueling practice that didn't go so well.  Gerry accuses Julius of having "the worst attitude" and Julius pauses  and responds, "attitude reflects leadership, captain".  This is where my perspective of leadership is founded; the need to be a reflective and positive leader whether in the classroom , on the track, or in life.  If  you are able reflect and understand your own experiences and perceptions you are better suited to understand, respect, and guide others.
